The fracture under impact of CFRP beams is interpreted in terms of a maximum stress criterion for failure initiation and fracture mechanics for damage growth. The determination of the critical value of the strain energy release rate for delamination is essential to the analysis. Two approaches described in this paper have been successfully used: one based on elementary strength of materials, the second on the measurement of the area under load - deflection curve in a conventional bending test. High sensitivity Moire interferometry was found to be unequal to the task. The results are applied to the interpretation of impact experiments.
