Abstract: A compact imaging system is proposed for electronicdocument input. In this configuration, a linear imagesensor formed on a glass substrate is coupled with anoptical fiber array plate. There are multiple aperturesin each photodiode of this sensor. Light from a linearlight emitting diode array is transmitted through theglass, the apertures and the fiber successively andilluminates a document. The scattered light comes backin the same fiber and is detected by the sensitive partof the photodiode. Experiment with a 200dpi sensorshows a good spatial resolution. With a white paperilluminated at 100$mu@W/cm$+2$/, a signal yield of 0.75pC is obtained with 1msec storage time. The depth offield is 70 $mu@m. A prototype hand-held scanner hasbeen developed by housing this imaging system in a10mm-wide pen-shaped speed of 12cm/sec. !3
