The basic objective of the RAINBOW (Radio Access INdependent Broadband On Wireless) project is to specify and implement a generic UMTS (Universal Mobile Tele-communication Ssytem) access infrastructure which can be used to investigate many architectural issues relating to third generation mobile systems. Specifically these objectives are: centre dot To demonstrate the feasibility and evaluate the complexity of a generic UMTS access infrastructure that can cope with different UMTS radio access techniques and with different propagation environments. centre to To investigate solutions for the migration from second generation mobiel systems (GSM, DCS1800 and DECT) to UMTS) centre dot To study possible solutions for the integration of UMTS radio access systems within the B-ISDN and IN contexts for both ATM-based transport and control proceudres.
