The on-the-move concept for mobile moddleware

In recent years multimedia applications such as the World Wide Web have become very popular. They work well in fixed network environments but with the significant growth in the area of mobile computing new requirements for the transmission of multimedia information have become obvious. A mobile channel has a lot of specific characteristics such as bandwidth limitations, a higher bit error rate and interruptions in transmission due to handover or lack of radio coverage. The protocols used for multimedia transmission are not aware of these raised requirements and cannot react accordingly. With mobility the user more and more gains the freedom to choose between a variety of mobile terminals or combinations of them. This choice adds even more restrictions to the range of multimedia information s/he is able to receive. These issues are the subject of the OnTheMove project.
