This paper presents a new method to calculate relevant QoS-parameters such as blocking probability, forced termination probability and number of handovers per call in micro- and picocellular wireless communications networks, which will be used in future mobile broadband communications systems. First the determination of state probabilities by means of modifications of the well-known Erlang loss formula and Engset-formula is summarised. Then the author points out some problems which restrict the applicability of both formulas in mobile communications systems with small-sized cells. Therefore a method to determine the validity of the formulas in such networks is shown. By means of this method a new formula to calculate the state probabilities based on a combination of Erlang's and Engset's approaches is presented. Finally expressions for the relevant system parameters are derived from this formula.
