Abstract: We review recent research showing how significant asymmetry and optical nonlinearity (second harmonic generation) can be produced by injection of electric charge into dye/polymer blends. The mechanism for producing the nonlinearity is different from the usual dipolar alignment of the dye in an electrostatic field. Charge injection has been achieved by purely electrical means using `in-plane' electrodes, or photochemically, by irradiating a bilayer structure comprising a photoconductive layer and the polymer/dye layer. !12
