Abstract: This paper proposes a modified H.261 code that uses both temporal and spatial domain interleaving for transmission over a lossy channel. In this scheme, a video input sequence is splitted into two temporally interleaved subsequences for separate H.261 encoding. After that, spatially interleaved macro blocks are transmitted separately by different packets. From these temporal and spatial interleavings, lost data can be substituted from the closest matched blocks in the adjacent frames. As a result, the error propagation effect is minimized and very little distortion is observed. Due to only one frame delay from temporal interleaving, the scheme maintains a good compression ratio and is attractive to real-time video communications.!14
