New approach for treatment of advanced malignant tumors: combination of chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy

Abstract: Eighty-three patients suffering from moderate oradvanced malignant tumors were treated by combinedchemotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT) in ourhospital. The short term result of such management isvery promising, the effectiveness seems to be nearly100% and the general responsive rate is 79.5% (CR $PLUPR). If compared with another group of 84 similarpatients whom were treated with PDT alone, the shortterm efficacy is 85.7% while the general response rateis 54.7% (P $LS 0.01), there is a significantstatistic. The better result of the combined approachis probably due to the action of the chemotherapeuticagent, potentially blocking the mitosis of the cellularcycle at certain phases of the cancer cells, making thecell membrane become more permeable to thephotochemical agent, HPD, and eliciting a bettercancerocidal effect. !0
