Recent studies presented new models for describing the impact of power line EMI on military communications sites. This paper presents a study of more than twenty years of power line EMI measurements close to the communication sites to develop a criteria for defining the minimum separation distance between communication sites and AC power distribution or power transmission facilities. Our analysis of the test data indicate that to protect communication sites from power line EMI, we must institute a program for maintenance of all power lines within 13 kilometers and to prevent the construction of new power distribution facilities within distances from the communication sites that are more practical than previously known.
