The metabolic activity of living cells has been measured with the light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS). Cells are confined to a flow chamber, one surface of which is the LAPS. The rate of acidification of the culture medium (due to the production of acidic metabolites) is a measure of the cellular catabolic rate and can be measured repeatedly and nondestructively. This rate is sensitive to a wide variety of biological effector molecules and toxicants.
