The voltage regulator keeps the generator voltage constant. The task of an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is to maintain the stator voltage by changing the excitation current of the machine, resultant change in reactive power. AVR has many limiters like Volts per Hertz Limiter, Time delay overexcitation limiter, Instantaneous overexcitation limiter, under excitation limiter, stator current limiter, etc. The Power System Stabilizer (PSS) is not working as a limiter, it improves the damping of low-frequency oscillations, and such oscillations can be observed in turbine speed, voltage, frequency, and active power. This paper analyzes the damping by the synchronous generator of electromechanical oscillations, historically been done with a conventional PSS regulator to boost the dynamic stability of the generator by means of the excitation control system of 76x4 MW UJVN Ltd., MB-II, Dharasu, Hydropower Project, Uttarakhand, India.
