The situation of the power grid has become more complicated under the New Circumstances, for the reason that the situation of the power grid is much different than ever before and it brings new challenges to cascading failures research fully in many aspects. This paper, firstly, expounds research status of cascading failures in traditional power grids in which many scholars have made a lot of efforts. And then, summarizes the current status and challenges of cascading failure research in alternating current & direct current (AC-DC) hybrid systems and high renewable energy penetrated power systems. Analyzes the reasons for the broad application prospects of artificial intelligence in cascading failures study. Finally, prospects the challenges of cascading failure Research at the current stage.
