Area Navigation (RNAV) is often described to the public as an aircraft navigational advancement that results in precise adherence to prescribed flight tracks. In this paper describes the introduction of RNAV departure procedures at Orange County's John Wayne Airport did not produce the expected result. The flight corridor was neither as narrow as expected nor was it co-located over the flight track that was being replaced. By understanding the reasons for the shifting of the track from the expected location, an alternative RNAV procedure was developed and the problem resolved. This case has implications on how RNAV departure procedures are modeled as well as a demonstration of the actual width of RNAV corridors.
