Successful Odor Control in the Heart of Orange County - California

The Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) is located in the heart of Southern California. The conveyance and treatment of wastewater is a naturally odorous process, and the public rightly expresses concern about, and intolerance of, noxious odors from wastewater facilities, including the collections systems that run through residential neighborhoods and business districts. OCSD has developed an extensive collections system odor control program that combines optimized chemical treatment using a patented process, continuous dosing profile improvements using state-of-the-art data collection and process control, and proven mechanical abatement techniques to minimize fugitive odor emissions throughout its extensive service area. These efforts have resulted in a considerable decrease of odor complaints attributed to OCSD's treatment facilities and collections system. This paper illustrates the comprehensive approach implemented to reduce odor complaints to meet OCSD's Strategic Goals and its Level of Service commitment to the community.
