Multilayer TiO_2 nanorods/Collagen/gold nanoparticles composite coatings were prepared in this work. The composite coatings showed good biocompatibility. The coatings were found to be able to increase the surface mediated gene transfection efficiency under visible light illumination. The mechanism was suggested to be gold nanoparticle absorbed light and increased the local temperature, which promoted the degradation of collagen, which, in turn, accelerated the release of gene factor and promoted gene transfection. It is also found such the thermal effect generated by gold nanoparticle also promoted the cells' intake function, which promoted gene transfection from another angle. Considering that collagen and TiO_2 are widely reported as bioactive coatings, such result could be potentially utilized in osteointegration coatings application.
