The biohybrid PECUU-ECM patch applied in a chronic ischemia model resulted in a better ejection fraction and % fractional shortening compared to non-treated control and losartan-treated groups. The remodeling benefit was of particular note in a sub-group of the sickest rats with very low initial ejection fractions where the echocardiographic end-points were found to improve after treatment. Histologically, both the % infarct size and LV thickness improved in the patch treated animals. The data indicate that bio-hybrid patch intervention may hold benefit even for patients where extensive remodeling has already occurred, and cardiac function is highly impaired.
