High-speed rail (HSR) has undergone a fast development process during the past 10 years or so in China, and the lightning protection maintenance of HSR catenary has now been recognized as a thorny issue as China has a vast territory with complex topography and climate, the characteristics and effects of lightning strike can be quite different from place to place, and the HSR lines are always built in open areas by viaducts or bridges. Till now, even if related research have proposed several model or method in theory to help realize lightning protection, targeted research on lightning protection maintenance for HSR still can hardly be found, also, lightning protection maintenance scheme based on operation and management science specifically designed for China HSR have seldom been discussed. In this paper, lightning protection maintenance schemes for HSR catenary abroad such as in Europe and in Japan, and their reference significance are analyzed, and the improvement of lightning protection maintenance scheme for HSR catenary in China is proposed by considering the related national industry standards as well as system characteristics.
