Characterization of Fouling of Tertiary Membranes

The use of membranes for tertiary treatment of wastewater has become more frequent over the years, especially with increasing interest in water reuse. Fouling limits the widespread of this technology as it creates operational challenges and increases costs. Membranes demonstrate increased fouling during periods of cold water temperatures in the spring season. The purpose of this study was to obtain an understanding of fouling characteristics and seasonal variations leading to it. This was done through conducting a historical analysis of membrane operations and field sampling campaign. The results show a relationship between membrane fouling and water temperature and flow. Higher fouling correlated to an increase in biopolymer concentrations in membrane feed, and capillary suction time (CST) of mixed liquor. It was concluded that seasonal variations may result in the increased release of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) by microorganisms. This leads to higher membrane fouling and worsened dewaterability of upstream sludge.
