A mobile coal segregation unit was successfully developed by Great River Energy and University of North Dakota. By segregating coal with excess impurities, such as sulfur, mercury and rocks, fewer pollutants are fed into the coal power plant's boiler, meaning it generates less pollutant emissions. The mobile coal segregation unit is a coal beneficiation segregator fabricated on a laboratory scale. The segregation mobile unit successfully segregates raw coal into three streams - product, dust, and reject - for various types of coal. It has been successfully used to test Lignite and PRB coal. This small coal segregation unit can be pulled on a trailer and easily transferred. The mobile unit was designed to link to Great River Energy's commercial DryFining™ dryer. It is not only used to demonstrate the fluidization and drying function, but also designed to perform segregation optimization testing. The feedback of the testing helps optimize the commercial DryFining™ process. The Sulphur and Mercury removal rate have been studied under the different fluidized air superficial velocity and the reject stream rate for both lignite and PRB coal. The optimized fluidized air superficial velocity and the reject stream rate will be used in the commercial DryFining™ process.
