USE OF THE SZEGO MILL FOR CLEAN ENERGY: FROM COAL BENEFICIATION TO FUEL ALCOHOL

As the name of this Conference has evolved from the original 'Coal Slurry Fuel Technology' to 'Clean Energy', so have some of the uses of the grinding mill called the Szego Mill™1 evolved from coal-based to biomass applications. All the various uses of the mill, many described at this Conference, are still pertinent. In this paper, a selection of such energy-related applications of the mill is reviewed. We will cover beneficiated coal slurry fuels (CSF), their properties and preparation for combustion. If the selective oil agglomeration technology be used, with petroleum-based oils or bio-oils, coal-water-oil fuels (CWOF) will be obtained. Sulfur removal by various means, from the fuel and/or during combustion is emphasized next along with improved ash processing for that purpose. Work has been done on reactivating both oil shale ashes and ashes from Fluidized Bed Combustion of coal with limestone addition for sulfur capture. Biomass utilization comes next, with comminution as a pre-processing need for various applications, from suspension firing to conversion of grains as well as cellulosic materials to sugars and their fermentation to alcohol.
