We have determined that the development of tolerance in 5. aureus cells that leads to chronic infections is regulated by substrate surface curvature. We are investigating a link between the surface curvature of a growth substrate and the kinetics of tolerance development in bacterial cells through the agr pathway. This work highlights the benefits of convex surfaces that delay bacterial cell colonization on implanted materials and delay the onset of chronic infection.
