Hydrogel Delivery of Lysostaphin Eliminates Orthopaedic Hardware Infection by Staphylococcus aureus and Supports Fracture Healing

We demonstrate that lysostaphin delivery via a PEG hydrogel carrier eliminates S. aureus infection of mouse femoral fractures. The hydrogel carrier is required for consistent eradication of infections as demonstrated by the high variability within the soluble lysostaphin treated group. Importantly, lysostaphin-delivering hydrogels support fracture repair after the infection is cleared substantiating the use of lysostaphin to prevent and treat S. aureus infections.
