The foams, composed of sodium/calcium polyacrylate cross-linked with PEG diacrylate and including compositions with a PNIPAM macro-CTA, contained the microporous structure typical of polyHIPE materials. The foams exhibited the mechanical integrity and high fluid absorption characteristics that would be important for severe injury applications with excess wound exudate. Additionally, the polyHIPEs demonstrated impressive cytocompatibility and hemostatic activity. Platelets were found to adhere to the polyHIPEs in equal number as compared to untreated gauze and drug-loaded foams were an effective antimicrobial for 72 h under physiologically relevant conditions.
