FSNs bind to fibrin clot boundaries under physiologic flow conditions. FSNs loaded with tPA exhibit fibrinolytic properties in the presence of static activation of clotting. In addition, tPA-FSNs augment the clotting process under flow at clot boundaries, which could facilitate treating coagulopathy/thrombotic imbalance in DIC. Future studies will investigate concentration dependence on the fibrinolytic and clotting properties of tPA-FSNs in vitro and in vivo in rodent models of DIC. This therapeutic strategy could simultaneously help treating the thrombotic and bleeding problems associated with DIC, which currently complicate proper treatment.
