This study demonstrated the viability and robust migration of MSCs off microparticles of decellularized ECM material encapsulated in fibrin gel as a cell delivery therapy. An in vivo pilot study applying this combined cell-scaffold therapy to full-thickness cutaneous wounds exhibited epidermal maturation by 14 days and robust collagen deposition in the dermal region. Cell seeded microparticles have potential as a cell delivery and paracrine therapy in impaired healing environments, such as traumatic injuries and chronic diabetic wounds which may benefit from large amounts of collagen deposition. Future work will focus on a dose response for MSC seeded micropartieles in wound healing and the effect on diabetic wounds as continued work toward clinical application.
