In recent years with increasing environmental concerns and depletion of conventional energy sources, distributed generations (DGs) have proved to be an alternative solutions to meet the power demand. This has driven to use generators along with inverters hence in modern distribution system use of inverter based distributed generations (IBDGs) are increasing. With the integration of such generators current during fault is limited by the current control techniques and this has created a problem in detecting the fault for conventional overcurrent relays in distribution system. The complexity of the problem is further increased when network reconfiguration is deployed to enhance the grid reliability in the presence of both DGs and Grid. In this work, adaptive setting of the over current relays are proposed to achieve the relay coordination for both grid connected and off grid modes using superconducting fault current limiters. The method is tested for IEEE 12 bus distribution system on DIgSILENT PowerFactory 2018 SPI (x64) software and found to be accurate and coordination is achieved for both modes of operation.
