Analysis of distribution tariff structures in the presence of non-linear load

In restructured power systems, distribution pricing has emerged as a vital driver to ensure economic efficiency of network operations. An increasing emphasis is being laid on the design of cost-reflective tariff structures so as to send appropriate economic signals to electricity consumers. Furthermore, with changing load profile and injection of large harmonic currents by the consumers in present distribution systems, designing an efficient tariff structure is a challenging task This paper investigates two most widely used tariff structures, viz. two-part and three-part, in the presence of non-linear load. Demand power and energy are calculated with varying percentage of non-linear load in the distribution system, and annual distribution price for both tariff structures is compared. Test results obtained for IEEE -18 bus radial distribution system indicate that three-part distribution tariff structure is significantly cost-reflective as compared to the two-part structure.
