A Survey: On Data Deduplication for Efficiently Utilizing Cloud Storage for Big Data Backups

Utilization of cloud storage for data backup has been leading technology as it provides scalability and availability. The current requirement of big data backups lead to the performance and storage space problems in cloud environment. Variety of solutions has been proposed to improve the cloud storage performance and to improve the storage space efficiency. Data deduplication is one of the promising techniques to resolve these storage issues. This paper covers the discussion on the background study of data deduplication technique which covers types of deduplication and its performance metrics, further discuss different chunking techniques and algorithms used in data deduplication process. The taxonomy and comparison of different chunking algorithms is presented in the paper. At the end paper summaries the research done in design of chunking algorithms, their advantages and limitations for future research directions.
