PLANNING A COMPUTERIZED MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CMMS) FOR A HOSPITAL SYSTEM

Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) programs in hospitals rely on Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software to support medical equipment maintenance. Key CMMS functions include medical equipment inventory, equipment maintenance scheduling, and documentation of maintenance and repair activities. These functions are essential for patient safety, risk management, regulatory compliance, and cost-effective HTM department operations. As hospitals change and medical technology evolves, moving from one CMMS product to another is sometimes necessary. This paper describes the change process for Duke University Health System, including development of a requirements document, carrying out request for information (RFI) and request for proposal (RFP) processes, and final selection of CMMS software.
