Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate that critical-size defects treated with the composite bone graft substitute had greater amount, strength, and stiffness of new bone compared to defects treated with cancellous allograft in a canine proximal humerus model. All bone graft substitute-treated defects were healed by bone at 26 weeks, with only 2% bone graft substitute remaining. Defects treated with CB contained large particles of cancellous and corticocancellous allograft bone in the central portion of the defects, many of which were surrounded by loose fibroconnective tissue.
