Conclusions: Results showed a caspase-1-dependent release of IL-1β in BMDM exposed to Cr~(3+), suggesting the activation of the NALP3 inflammasome pathway in BMDM in response to Cr~(3+), which corroborate results from Caicedo et al. [3]. ELISA results also suggest the involvement of the inflammasome pathway in BMDM in response to Co~(2+), but to a lower extent. Overall, the lower IL-1β release and the absence of the p20 subunit detection by Western blot with Co~(2+) (possibly because of signal below detection limit) suggest that the inflammatory response to Co~(2+) and Cr~(3+) involve different molecular pathways.
