The applications of battery storage are largely known to cover the fluctuations of renewable energy sources. A further application of battery storage is the coverage of the energy variations appearing from the scheduled production (in the day-ahead electricity market) to the actual production of a combined heat and power (CHP) system. This paper discusses the use of the charging and discharging of a properly sized battery storage system to cover the variations due to the mismatch between the scheduled and actual CHP production. This mismatch, if not reduced, would lead to the payment of penalties, thus affecting the economics of energy delivery.
