Vegetable oils are an invaluable raw material source for the production of a wide variety of polymers. For this reason, the paint industry is in search of vegetable oils with high degrees of instauration to use them, for example, in the formulation of alkyd resins. Vegetable oils containing a great amount of unsaturated fatty acids are used to produce alkyd resins with higher degree of cross-linking, i.e. good film forming properties and corrosion protection. Sacha inchi oil, a peruvian vegetable oil, contains a high content of unsaturated fatty acids (linolenic acid), hence is a potential renewable source of biopolymers for the production of alkyd resins. In the study, the synthesis of alkyd resins from Sacha Inchi oil was carried out using the alcoholysis-esterification method. Alkyd resins with short and medium chains were synthesized. Properties of the resin such as acid value, density, viscosity, color, and curing time were evaluated in order to characterize the new resins. In order to evaluate their potential use as alkyd paints, four different formulations prepared with Sacha inchi resin and linseed resin (short and medium chains) were compared in an accelerated corrosion test.
