Research on Dynamic Nature of Dilemma Zone at Signalized Intersections

This paper analyses the dynamic nature of dilemma zone (DZ) which is one insecurity factors of intersections. Eliminating dilemma zones can reduce conflicts at intersections. However, because dilemma zones have dynamic characters, it is useless to discuss how to eliminate a dilemma zone without dynamic. Two aspects of dynamic nature are proposed in this paper, one of which is based on vehicles' characteristics, and the other one is based on time with a following car considered. The relationship between dilemma zone and vehicles is illustrated in the form of a graph based on the definition of DZ. Linear car following models have been used to analyze the time dynamicity of DZ, which plays an importat role in the prediction of DZ and guilding vehicle to avoid DZ in advance.
