This work presents a disposable polymer-based microneedle array which carries out the insertions by mimicking the vibrating motion of the mosquito's proboscis. The proposed device, which comprises a 10×1 high-aspect-ratio (HAR) parylene microneedle array and a chamber structure, was monolithically realized by using a novel fabrication process. The vibrating motion of the microneedles was generated by using a piezoelectric actuator. The potential application of the device is to extract and collect blood by puncturing the dermis layer of human skin. The fabricated device features advantages such as biocompatibility, simple fabrication process, and low cost. In addition, the measured resistance force versus displacement was also presented. A 40% reduction of insertion force was demonstrated when the microneedle insertion was assisted by vibratory motion induced by the actuator. The relationship between the insertion force and vibration frequency was demonstrated.
