This paper presents an analytical study for a practical medium voltage distribution network from technical and economic views. This case study represents a medium voltage ring distribution system which is a part of real Egyptian distribution system. It has been handled using the Electrical Power System Analysis & Operation (ETAP) Software to analyze the impacts of capacitor banks switching and reconfiguration of the distribution system on system performance. The different loading conditions through winter season have been taken into consideration. This analysis is based on real measurements of the feeders and transformers loading on both the medium voltage side and the low voltage side at the rush hours. Furthermore, 7 days 24 hours measurements of different power quality parameters of reactive power, power factor, THD and distortion power are recorded using network analyzer/transient recorder PQ-Box 200. Both ETAP analysis and real measurements declares without any doubt the importance of studying the optimal reallocation of the capacitors integrated with reconfiguration of distribution networks and loading variations.
