Teaching Interface of Finger Braille Teaching System Using Smartphone

Finger Braille is an efficient tactual communication medium for the deafblind persons who had onset of blindness first. Deafblind persons can communicate only through interpreters, because general non-disabled persons are not skilled in Finger Braille. A Finger Braille teaching system between non-disabled senders and deafblind receivers has been developed. The teaching system recognizes the non-disabled sender's speech and displays the associated dot pattern of Finger Braille. The non-disabled sender can then dot Finger Braille on the fingers of the deafblind receiver by observing the displayed dot pattern. In this paper, we adopted a 5 inches Android smartphone, and designed single column and double column teaching interfaces. The results of the evaluation experiment showed that the single column teaching interface was more easily viewable, the double column teaching interface promoted better performances (the response time, dotting speed and accuracy of dotting). Therefore, the double column teaching interface should be adopted as the teaching interface using the smartphones.
