This paper proposes a type of novel variable-flux reluctance machines (VFRMs) with segmented rotors. Their operation principles and electromagnetic performance, including flux linkage, back-EMF, torque and unbalanced radial magnetic force, etc, are thoroughly investigated. Compared with the traditional partitioned-stator variable-flux reluctance machines (PS-VFRMs), the proposed VFRMs can significantly alleviate the unbalanced force on the rotor while maintaining a very low torque ripple.
