Additives Technology to Improve Easy Cleaning of Latex Paints and Coatings

Architectural paint manufacturers are interested in designing coatings that can resist household stains such as wine, coffee, pen, and dirt. Consumers are interested in coatings that are washable and resist stains in heavy traffic areas of the home. If painted walls especially light colors can resists wear and look newer for a longer time then consumers will be willing to pay a higher premium for qualify paints. In this study, additives such as waxes, acrylates, and thickeners were evaluated in latex flat formulations to see if they can improve stain resistance and easy cleaning. Porosity and surface measurements were recorded and compared to washability ratings. In the frame work of the study, little correlations were noticeable but surface energy measurements show the balance of hydrophobicity with recoatability are needed to improve stain resistance. Understanding the barrier properties of the coating matrix is essential to predict why certain additives technology could be used to improve stain resistance of a coating. In the study, the addition of waterbased polyacrylate leveling additive at 1% solid into a coating can help remove stains such as pencil, charcoal, and crayon. A wax alloy modified HDPE, can be used at 3 to 4% to resist pen markings and a 1% synthetic nano-size smectite can offer barrier properties that helps with stain removal regardless of what latex resins are used. However, better stain resistance latexes will yield better final results.
