Hydrodemolition Repairs of the Liberty Tunnel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The Liberty Tunnel was constructed in the mid – 1920’s as a major connector from the suburbsto downtown Pittsburgh, PA. After almost 100 years of service a major rehabilitation wasrequired. Because of the traffic flows of over 100,000 vehicles per day, the tunnel could not beclosed during construction and the repairs had to be done fast. The Pennsylvania Departmentof Transportation specified hydrodemolition to be used to remove deteriorated concrete fromthe tunnel walls and specified that work could only be done at night during low traffic volumesto achieve the goals of rapid construction and minimal traffic impacts.
