Study on a Model and Demonstration of Public Transit Priority Technology Strategy at an Urban Arterial Road

As a development strategy of urban traffic, transit priority becomes a necessary choice to solve traffic jams in many cities of our country. Taking Lingnan Road in Foshan as example, the field investigation results showed us a series of traffic problems, such as low travel speed, high bus stop delays, poor reliability and large intersection queue-length. Based on the works done by the predecessors, the paper proposed several optimization technics and measures e.g. the design methods of a bus lane, bus-only approaches, bus stop and transit signal priority to solve the problems. Using VISSIM micro-simulation to evaluate the strategy's efficiency along an arterial road, the results indicate that the presented strategies can improve the operation efficiency of the transit system effectively. The measures reduced the number of stops by 8% to 66% and travel delay time to up to 70% of the transit, while restricting the impact on vehicular traffic to the minimum. Moreover, the number of stops and travel delay time of vehicular traffic actually got a slight decrease.
