In Finland, crushed concrete aggregate (CCA) has been successfully used in road construction applications for about 20 years. Current design codes and guidance that incorporate this experience address mainly the issues of road pavement engineering. Since the cities are a major source of CCA because of various demolition works, it is desirable that this material is applied to a larger degree in urban earth construction. The effective utilization of CCA is in some cases hindered by the lack of knowledge of this material's behavior and insufficient guidance to municipal structures. In order to improve effective utilization of CCA, it has been necessary to carry out field investigations and literature study to research and resolve practical problems regarding the use of CCA. This paper presents an overview of the advantages and challenges of the utilization of CCA in urban applications and also summaries the results from the field and laboratory investigations. The paper concentrates on the practical solutions and provides information on the new guidance available on this issue. From the point of view of material features, the results of the laboratory and field tests have proved the CCA's good suitability for urban earth construction material.
