Poka-Yoke Student Organizations: Using Lean Principles to Increase Effective Leadership and Success in Student Organizations

Good leadership plays a substantial role in the success of an organization. Engineering students often join student chapters of professional organizations to develop professional skills, build networks, and attain other career development goals. However, the factors that drive effectiveness in these organizations are not clearly specified. Additionally, the cyclical nature of leadership transitions creates non-value added re-training each school year, at the expense of members who seek professional development opportunities. This paper looks at the effect of leadership on perceived success in student organizations. Social Greek organizations are widely considered places to develop leadership skills and broader citizenship behavior. This study compares Social Greek organizations to engineering student organizations with the aim to identify leadership traits that are associated with organization success. Such identification will reduce waste in engineering student organizations through effective leadership training and knowledge management programs at the club and college levels.
