Overview of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Development at Forschungszentrum Juelich

Juelich has been developing solid oxide fuel cells since the early 1990s. The development work covers the whole chain from materials synthesis, layer and component manufacturing (cells, interconnects, sealants), joining and sealing process development, stacking, single cell and stack testing, system development and testing, as well as stack and system modeling. Meanwhile, state-of-the-art cells show very high current densities even at low operating temperatures (up to 1.7 A/cm~2 at 600°C and 0.7 V) in a single-cell environment. The basic interconnect steel is commercially available and furthermore has been optimized with respect to enhanced creep resistance. The main highlights concerning SOFC application are one short stack which has been operating for approx. 56,000 h with a mean voltage degradation rate < 0.8%/1,000 h, another stack operating for about 27,000 h with extremely low voltage degradation below 0.2%/1,000 h and the operation of a 20 kW system based on four 5 kW stack sub-modules. Additionally, thin-film electrolyte anode-supported cells have been developed, a low-cost cell manufacturing line has been evaluated and a novel stack design with enhanced thermomechanical stability is under development. The presentation gives an overview of the present status at Juelich.
