Foundation construction involves excavation, followed by construction and backfilling. In some cases foundations are placed on compacted sandy soils. The influence of relative compaction on the compressibility of silty sand soils in the State of Kuwait is examined herein by a comprehensive laboratory testing program on near surface samples. The program included basic properties, compaction and consolidation tests. Various soil parameters were determined including the compaction characteristics, the compression index C_c, the swell index C_s, and the coefficient of consolidation C_v. The results indicate that as the relative compaction increased towards 100%, the compressibility, and the compressibility parameters C_c and C_s decreased and the coefficient of consolidation C_v increased. The effect of using of 1% by weight cement additive to the soil on the compressibility, after curing, is also examined.
