Switched Reluctance Machines are usually operated by asymmetric half bridge converters. The phase currents are therefore unidirectional. When connecting the terminals of the machine to standard half bridges, the direction of the phase currents can be arbitrarily chosen. This paper evaluates the effects that the utilization of bidirectional phase currents has on the iron losses in the different parts of the machine. Beside, different formulas and approaches for the determination of the iron losses are compared to each other.
