This paper describes an empirical study aimed at quantifying and comparing the performance of roadsalt for deicing of parking lots and sidewalks under specific weather, site and traffic conditions. Datacollected from a series of field tests are used in this analysis, involving measurements on snow cover, friction, weather and pavement conditions, and treatment operations. The paper details performancetrends as related to some specific treatment and condition variables, such as, application rate, pavement temperature, precipitation type and amount, and traffic. The test results and findings can beapplied for developing quantitative snow melting performance prediction models and thus optimal saltapplication rates for specific weather and site conditions.
