The conceptual design of a deployable truss structure is presented. The truss is designed to function as a deployable boom which places a magnetometer a sufficient distance from a CubeSat from an initially-stowed configuration inside the CubeSat envelope. The truss deployment is driven by the actuation of shape memory alloy wires which are integrated as compliant hinges. These hinges enable the z-folding of the truss longerons. The flexure size, the boom deployed stiffness, and the deployment dynamics are predicted and quantified by finite element analysis. A physical demonstration model is fabricated which will be subjected to experimental testing to validate the analysis.
