Integrating Cultural Symbolism into Bridge Design

Hatch Mott MacDonald was retained by the BC Ministry of Transportation andInfrastructure to deliver project management, concept development, detailed design, andconstruction support services for the Squamish Pedestrian Overpass. The overpass provides safe,pleasant passage for residents over both the CN Rail track and Highway 99, while becoming alandmark structure. The engineers collaborated closely with a Squamish Nation artist to identifyopportunities for the inclusion of artwork and cultural symbolism into the design. The result isdistinct bridge that acts as a gateway to the community of Squamish, British Columbia.
