This paper presents the development of a green control unit (GCU) for eco-driving of electric vehicles (EVs) through the use of information and communication technology (ICT). The GCU is able to provide the most energy-efficient driving strategy for the EV driver based on the road information obtained via wireless communication, EV models and the measurements from on-board sensors and the EV propulsion system. The Model Predictive Control (MPC) technique is adopted for developing the GCU algorithms. Two different energy cost functions and different assumptions for the driver model and the availability of road information are used to develop five different MPC-based GCU algorithms. Computer simulations were performed to compare the performance of the five EV driving strategies against the other two scenarios which simply follow the upper and lower speed limits, respectively. Simulation results show that the MPC-based GCU algorithm using the road information and a good driver model outperforms the other four schemes of GCU algorithms.
